Umahi: Lagos-Calabar Highway Aims to Mitigate Flooding

Engr. David Umahi, the Minister of Environment, addressed claims that the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway contributes to flooding in Lagos. He clarified that the project is designed to improve drainage and facilitate the evacuation of floodwaters, thus serving as a long-term solution to flooding issues.

During a spot assessment, Umahi discussed the need for dredging and environmental mitigation measures with Lagos state officials. He attributed persistent flooding to the high stress on the highway rather than the project itself.

The highway incorporates adequate culverts and drainage systems to manage stormwater effectively. Umahi assured stakeholders of the federal government's commitment to collaborate with the Lagos state government on implementing these measures, including strict enforcement of approved setbacks to prevent obstruction of drainage channels.

He also announced plans for continuous monitoring and engagement with relevant agencies to address environmental concerns and promote sustainable practices.
