Mob Attacks Robbery Suspect in Enugu Market Incident

On March 13, 2026, at approximately 3:30 PM, a mob attacked Fridai Onwujekwu, a robbery suspect, in Ek Market Square, Akiyi Umulokpa, Uzo Uwani Local Government Area, Enugu State. The police received a distress call from the public after Onwujekwu was apprehended while in possession of a stolen pump-action gun.

He had previously attacked Okechukwu Denni Okoaku, a member of a neighborhood watch in Awkunato Village, on January 10, 2026, during which he stole the weapon. Following his capture, the mob attempted to lynch him, but police quickly mobilized a patrol team to the scene and rescued him.

Despite their intervention, Onwujekwu sustained various injuries and was initially rushed to a police clinic before being referred to the Nigeria Teaching Hospital Ituku Ozalla for urgent medical care. The Enugu State Police have initiated a discreet investigation into the incident, while emphasizing the importance of allowing law enforcement to handle criminal matters rather than resorting to mob justice.
