Over 20,000 Irregular Migrants Return to Kano, Worsening Insecurity and Food Insecurity

The return of over 20,000 irregular migrants to Kano between 2017 and 2022 has exacerbated insecurity and food insecurity in the state. Halima Kassim, the project manager of the Resilient Opportunities Outreach Trade Sustain (ROOTS) Media Engagement for Returnee Free Movement Project in Kano, highlighted that factors like desertification, erratic rainfall, water scarcity, and reduced agricultural productivity are contributing to migration as a survival strategy.

The project aims to discourage irregular migration, raise awareness, and promote sustainable livelihoods by increasing agricultural resilience and inclusive livelihood opportunities. This initiative seeks to reduce migration-related risks among youth and empower vulnerable communities.
