Mukhtar Advocates Livestock Focus in Agrifood Strategy

On July 23, 2026, during a High-Level Briefing in Abuja, the Honourable Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, urged that the livestock sector should be central to Nigeria’s Draft Agrifood System Strategy and Action Plan (2026–2035). He described livestock as a strategic driver for economic growth, food security, and rural prosperity.

Mukhtar advocated for significant investments in animal health, livestock genetic improvement, and sustainable rangeland management to enhance productivity. He also highlighted the need to strengthen livestock value chains through investments in processing, markets, and infrastructure.

The Honourable Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, revealed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu directed the development of a long-term roadmap to align Nigeria’s agrifood system with the African Union’s Kampala Declaration. The strategy aims to boost agricultural productivity, reduce post-harvest losses, and attract investment in the agrifood sector, with effective governance deemed essential for success.
