Nigerian Navy Arrests 13 in Bayelsa Illegal Mining Bust

The Nigerian Navy successfully foiled illegal mining operations in Bayelsa State, arresting 13 suspects. Capt.

Abiodun Folorunsho, the Director of Naval Information, disclosed that the operation was conducted following credible intelligence regarding two wooden boats suspected of illegal mining activities. The interception occurred in the Lekeson Liama Community within the Brass Local Government Area, where a large quantity of suspected illegal black sand was discovered onboard.

The 13 crew members were arrested and subsequently handed over to the Division Police Officer in Nemb Division for further investigation and possible prosecution in line with existing procedures directed by the Bayelsa State government. The naval spokesperson emphasized the Navy's commitment to protecting Nigeria's maritime environment and preventing illegal exploitation of natural resources, which undermines economic development and environmental sustainability.
