NCAA to Launch RFID Baggage Tracking in Nigerian Airports

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has announced plans to introduce Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology for tracking passengers’ checked-in luggage at Nigerian airports. Michael Achimugu, the Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the NCAA, shared this information via his official X account on Tuesday.

Achimugu stated that the NCAA collaborated with domestic airlines, aviation service providers, and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria in Lagos to finalize the migration to RFID bag tagging. This technology will allow passengers to track their luggage in real time from check-in to arrival, addressing issues of misrouted and short-landed bags while improving baggage handling and complaint resolution.

Achimugu noted that although RFID technology is not new globally, its introduction in Nigeria marks a significant advancement. The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has approved the review of the technology, and consultations have been held to address potential implementation challenges.

Achimugu expressed optimism about the initiative, indicating it would enhance the passenger experience in Nigeria's aviation sector.
