NCC Warns Against Relying on Truecaller for Accurate Phone Number Identification

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has issued a warning against relying solely on Truecaller for accurate phone number identification. NCC Executive Vice Chairman (EVC) Aminu Maida emphasized that the results from Truecaller are not always reliable as the platform is connected to the nation's Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) registration database.

Maida highlighted during a news conference that Truecaller is not an official identity verification platform. He explained that phone numbers are a limited national resource and may be recycled if dormant for a year, leading to potential reassignment.

The NCC is collaborating with sector regulators to develop a platform that allows access to data when numbers are recycled. Maida also cautioned against inappropriate SIM card registration practices and emphasized the importance of registering SIMs correctly.
