IPAC Warns Court Rulings Threaten Nigeria's Democracy

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has raised alarms regarding recent court judgments that ordered the deregistration of five political parties, including the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). Mr.

Martin Egbeola, speaking on Wednesday in Abuja, emphasized that these judicial pronouncements could weaken Nigeria's multi-party political system and undermine citizens' constitutional rights to political participation and association. IPAC warned that the cumulative effect of these judgments poses a serious threat to Nigeria's democracy, suggesting a dangerous trend aimed at eroding the multi-party system.

Egbeola urged the National Judicial Council (NJC) to ensure that judicial independence is upheld and that the judiciary remains a tool for the common man rather than being manipulated for political interests. He cautioned against the potential for anti-democratic forces to exploit state institutions for narrow political gains, stressing the importance of preserving public confidence in democratic governance.
