NEC Approves N83.2bn for Flood Mitigation in Nigeria

During its 158th meeting, the National Economic Council (NEC) approved a sum of N83.2 billion to mitigate the impact of flooding and climate-related emergencies across Nigeria. This decision was made under the leadership of Vice President Kashim Shettima, who emphasized the need for states to collaborate with the federal government to resolve logistical compliance barriers that prevent agricultural products from reaching international markets.

The funding will support the Anticipatory Action Task Force (AATF) in implementing early interventions against floods and climate-related disasters. The council, represented by Minister of State for Budget and Economic Planning Atiku Bagudu, noted the importance of proactive measures rather than reactive responses to disasters.

The approved amount represents 50% of the AATF's request for N166.42 billion. The NEC recognized the growing threat of annual flooding and agreed on the necessity of a shift from traditional disaster response models to a more anticipatory approach.
