New Report Warns of Vulnerabilities in Digital Systems

A report by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) identifies significant vulnerabilities in global interconnected digital systems. It emphasizes the need for coordinated action among countries to improve digital resilience and protect essential services such as healthcare and finance.

The report warns that failures in digital systems can lead to severe consequences, including disruptions from solar storms, submarine cable cuts, and extreme weather events, potentially resulting in a digital pandemic. ITU Secretary-General Doreen Bogdan-Martin and UNDRR head Kamal Kishor stress the importance of understanding natural risks and rethinking protections for interconnected systems.

The report suggests six priorities for safeguarding critical digital infrastructure, including mapping vulnerabilities and developing models for potential chain reactions. It calls for countries to establish robust fallback systems and conduct joint scenario planning to proactively address high-impact risks.
