NHRC Investigates Rights Violations in Lagos Estate Demolition

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has initiated an investigation following a petition from residents of Blue Roof Estate, Surulere Community, Alagbado, Lagos State, alleging human rights violations due to property demolitions. The petition, filed by counsel Akeem Aponmade on May 5 and registered as Case No.

C/2026/CPR/1492/HQ, claims that between January 27 and February 26, a group demolished homes and structures, allegedly under a court order on behalf of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA). However, the FHA later issued a public disclaimer denying any involvement.

The petition alleges harassment and intimidation of residents, leading to displacement and disruption of livelihoods, and claims that the demolition resulted in a resident's death. It also raises concerns about ongoing demolitions despite legal proceedings and questions the role of security personnel during the incidents.

The residents seek a thorough investigation into the demolitions, accountability for violations, and examination of public officials' conduct.
