Darki-biyu Residents Protest Demolitions in Abuja

Residents of the Darki-biyu community in the Jabi area of Abuja protested at Human Rights Radio on September 2, 2026, against a demolition exercise conducted by the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA). The FCTA had issued a 72-hour notice for residents to vacate their homes, which led to the demolition of marked houses and structures.

This abrupt action displaced thousands of families, leaving many without shelter. Residents, including Mr. Dickson and Deacon Israel Audu, expressed their distress over the loss of their homes and belongings.

They appealed to FCTA Minister Nyesom Wike for clarification on the demolition scope, questioning why unmarked sections of the community were targeted. Mukhtar Galadima, an FCTA official, stated that the demolitions aimed to clear structures on waterways and enhance security in the Federal Capital Territory.

Residents demanded a review of the process, proper identification of affected structures, and engagement with stakeholders before further actions.
