Tinubu Orders Military Manhunt After Niger Abductions

On August 25, President Bola Tinubu directed security and intelligence agencies to initiate a coordinated operation to rescue victims abducted during a series of attacks in Niger State on August 21. Gunmen invaded several communities in the Borgu area, including Dekara, Gidan Zana, Sabon Gida, and Masaka, killing residents and abducting an unspecified number of individuals.

The attackers, dressed in military-style clothing, targeted worshippers at Kpenya Mosque during prayers. Tinubu condemned the actions of the attackers, labeling them as “enemies of peace and humanity,” and assured that the Federal Government would deploy all necessary resources for rescue and relief efforts.

The Niger State Police Command is still assessing the situation, with initial reports indicating that the attackers entered through Dekara District. Local sources suggest that as many as 500 people may have been abducted, based on a video circulating on social media showing a large group of captives.
