NPC Launches Digital Birth and Death Registration System

The National Population Commission (NPC) of Nigeria has launched a nationwide digital registration system for births and deaths, effective July 1, 2026. This initiative aims to address the significant gap in registration, with current statistics showing that only 57% of births and less than 20% of deaths are officially documented.

Dr. Aminu Yusuf, Chairman of the NPC, emphasized that the digital vital registration platform will provide faster services, including 24-hour online access and automated data validation.

The NPC plans to establish 4,011 functional registration centers across Nigeria's 774 local government areas, with an expansion goal of 8,000 centers. The initiative is supported by partnerships with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and UNICEF, and it aims to ensure that every Nigerian has legal identification.

The registration process for births and deaths will remain free and accessible, even for those without internet access, as the NPC seeks to achieve universal registration and improve demographic data for effective governance.
