Nigeria Launches Online Birth Registration Platform VitalReg

The Nigerian Population Commission (NPC), led by Chairman Dr. Aminu Yusuf, announced the launch of an online birth registration platform named VitalReg during a press briefing in Abuja.

This digital civil registration system will commence nationwide on July 1, 2026, covering all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. The platform aims to modernize the registration of births and deaths, providing faster and more efficient services with 24-hour online access to digital certificates.

Currently, Nigeria records an estimated five million births annually, with only 57% of births and less than 20% of deaths registered. The NPC plans to establish 4,011 functional registration centers across the country and collaborate with local governments and UNICEF to enhance the network.

Dr. Yusuf emphasized that the VitalReg platform will integrate into Nigeria's digital identity ecosystem, supporting the federal government's digital transformation agenda while ensuring that birth registration services remain highly subsidized to avoid creating barriers for access.
