NSIEC Commissioner Mohammed Wawa Freed After 11 Months

Mohammed Wawa, a commissioner with the Independent Electoral Commission (NSIEC), was released from captivity on Wednesday night after being abducted by armed bandits along a Niger State highway in September 2025. His release occurred in the Funtua area, near the boundary with Zamfara State.

Initially, a ransom of ₦40 million was paid, but Wawa was not released until an additional payment was made on the day of his release. The total amount paid by the family remains undisclosed.

Wawa described his experience as deeply traumatic, stating that he received only one meal per day and lacked access to clean water, sharing the same water source as cattle. After being held for over 300 days, he emphasized the need for a comprehensive medical check-up due to his deteriorated condition.

The family expressed gratitude for the support received during this ordeal and called for prayers for other kidnapping victims. The case has drawn attention to the ongoing security threats posed by banditry in the region.
