IHRC Warns Nigeria Faces Critical Insecurity Crisis

The International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) has issued a warning that Nigeria is at a critical juncture concerning its escalating insecurity issues. In a statement signed by Abdullahi Bakoji Adamu, the country director for IHRC, the organization emphasized the urgent need for the Nigerian government to respond decisively to the rising wave of banditry and terrorism.

The IHRC highlighted that the roots of this crisis can be traced back to earlier injustices and systemic failures, particularly noting the discovery of gold deposits in Zamfara State, which has led to the displacement of Fulani pastoralists from their ancestral lands. This disruption has contributed to increased poverty and crime, including cattle rustling and banditry.

The IHRC expressed concern over the role of vigilante groups and alleged extrajudicial actions by security personnel, which have deepened grievances rather than resolving them. The organization called for an urgent review of the drivers of banditry and demanded that security agencies act professionally and respect human rights.
