IHRC Calls for Investigation into Foreign Role in Unrest

The International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) has issued a statement urging a comprehensive investigation into allegations of foreign involvement in the unrest occurring in Benue and Plateau states. The call was made by the IHRC's country director, Abdullahi Bakoji Adamu, following reports circulating on social media that accused foreign individuals of inciting religious tensions in Nigeria.

The IHRC described these claims as serious and capable of worsening the security situation in the affected areas. The organization emphasized the need for Nigerian security agencies to conduct a thorough, impartial, and professional investigation to establish the truth, stressing that anyone found guilty, regardless of nationality, should be held accountable under the law.

Furthermore, the IHRC called on the National Assembly to conduct a legislative inquiry into the matter to protect national interests. The organization also condemned the spread of unverifiable information and hate speech, urging the public to remain calm and avoid taking matters into their own hands.
