Nigeria Triumphs Over Burundi in Billie Jean King Cup Opener

Nigeria commenced its Billie Jean King Cup Africa Group III campaign with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Burundi. The match took place on Monday, where Khadijat Moham delivered a dominant performance, winning her singles match 6-0 against her Burundian opponent, giving Nigeria an early lead.

Burundi responded with Ang Ishimwe defeating Ogunjobi 6-3, 6-3, leveling the contest. The tie was decided in the doubles rubber, where the experienced pair of Oyinlomo Quadri and Ogunjobi took control, winning the first set 6-1 and holding their nerve in the second set.

Ogunjobi sealed the match with a forehand winner, ensuring Nigeria's triumph at 2-1. This victory positions Nigeria strongly in Group C, with the group winner advancing in the promotion race for Africa Group III.

The Nigerian camp, led by captain Rotimi Akinloy, is optimistic about securing promotion in 2024, with Quadri establishing herself as a standout performer.
