Nigeria Signs Energy Cooperation Pact with IEA

On Thursday, Nigeria and the International Energy Agency (IEA) signed a Joint Work Programme aimed at strengthening strategic cooperation in energy policy, investment, economic growth, and energy security. Vice President Kashim Shettima described Nigeria’s formal admission into the IEA as an Association Country as a significant milestone, showcasing the achievements of President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms.

Shettima stated that this admission reflects Nigeria’s strategic importance in the global energy landscape and the confidence the IEA has in Nigeria's commitment to international energy cooperation. He highlighted the potential benefits from the IEA’s institutional knowledge and expertise.

Dr Fatih Birol, leader of the IEA delegation, noted that Nigeria's membership followed extensive discussions and unanimous approval from the board of member countries, including the United States, Japan, Germany, Italy, and the United Kingdom. The IEA will support Nigeria's energy sector development over the coming years, providing policy advice and training for Nigerian experts.
