Nigeria has established a presidential task force dedicated to preventing Ebola virus disease outbreaks within the country. The task force was inaugurated on Thursday in Abuja by Femi Gbajabiamila, the President's Chief of Staff.
According to government officials, the move represents a proactive approach to disease control, with no cases of Ebola currently reported in Nigeria. The task force operates on a prevention-focused strategy rather than a reactive one, drawing lessons from Nigeria's experience during the 2014 Ebola crisis.
Officials emphasized that the aim is to maintain the country's current disease-free status by implementing measures before any outbreak occurs, avoiding the emergency responses that characterized the previous epidemic. Multiple subcommittees have been established to handle different operational areas.
These include disease surveillance mechanisms, border control protocols, immigration management, and emergency response procedures. The structure reflects the government's plan to address various entry points and monitoring systems that could detect the virus early.
Gbajabiamila stated that significant preparatory work has already taken place, positioning Nigeria as a leader in Ebola preparedness across the African continent. The government has also expressed confidence in the country's capacity to coordinate and lead continental efforts in addressing public health emergencies of this nature.
The task force represents the administration's determination to ensure Nigeria avoids a repeat of the 2014 health crisis that strained national resources.
