Nigeria Mourns the Loss of Law Scholar Prof. Okpaluba

Professor Mathew Chucks Okpaluba, a prominent figure in the Nigerian legal and academic community, has passed away. Born in 1942, he began his legal studies during a pivotal time in post-colonial African legal systems.

His early career included an appointment at the University of the West Indies, where he contributed significantly to the Faculty of Law's reputation. In 1978, he returned to Africa, holding professorial positions in Nigeria, Eswatini, Lesotho, and South Africa.

Over his more than four-decade-long career, he became a leading authority on constitutional law, administrative law, labor law, social security law, jurisprudence, and human rights. His scholarly work emphasized legality, procedural fairness, and judicial accountability.

His doctoral thesis focused on labor law, and his first book, published in 1975, addressed collective bargaining in the Caribbean. At the time of his passing, he was finalizing a publication on labor law with Professor M Budeli-Nemokonde.

Many of his students have achieved notable careers as judges, advocates, and public officials across Africa.
