Nigeria Launches Campaign Against Skin Bleaching Epidemic

The Nigerian Association of Dermatologists has initiated a nationwide campaign titled "Embrace Your Skin" to address the growing public health crisis associated with skin bleaching, which has a prevalence rate of 40-84% in Nigeria, according to WHO data. The campaign aims to educate Nigerians about the dangers of skin bleaching, which is linked to severe health complications, including skin cancer, organ damage, and even death.

Prof. Dasetima Altraid emphasized that skin bleaching is not merely a cosmetic issue but poses serious health risks that require collective action.

The campaign encourages individuals to embrace their natural skin tones and involves stakeholders such as Eucerin, NAFDAC, and the Federal Ministry of Health. A press conference was held at the LUTH Dermatology Clinic in Lagos to unveil the campaign, where the need for a unified effort to combat the skin bleaching epidemic was highlighted.

The initiative seeks to dismantle the false narrative that associates lighter skin with social advantages and to promote cultural self-acceptance.
