The Nigerian government intends to station journalists alongside military personnel during selected combat and security operations, Defence Minister General Christoph Gwabin Musa said on Thursday. The announcement came at a national security summit in Abuja organised jointly by the Nigeria Union of Journalists and the Department of State Services.
The plan aims to deepen collaboration between media outlets and security agencies while increasing public trust in military activities. According to Musa, the embedding initiative addresses the evolving nature of modern conflict, which extends beyond traditional battlefields into information and communication spaces.
By granting journalists direct access to military operations, the government expects to generate more accurate reporting on counterinsurgency efforts and help citizens understand the reality of ongoing security challenges across the country. The Defence Minister, represented at the summit by Special Adviser Rear Admiral Olusanya Bankol (retd.), stressed that the media serves a strategic role in shaping public perception of security operations.
The summit brought together security chiefs, policymakers, media executives, academics, and civil society representatives to discuss approaches to Nigeria's evolving security challenges. The federal government's move follows longstanding calls for greater transparency in military operations.
Details on the scope of the embedding programme—including which operations will be open to journalists, safety protocols, and editorial independence safeguards—have not yet been disclosed.
