Nigeria, Portugal Strengthen Ties During Minister's Visit

On July 17, 2026, Nigeria's Foreign Minister, Bianca Odumegwu Ojukwu, reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to strengthening bilateral relations with Portugal during her official visit. This engagement occurred alongside the Euro-African Forum in Cascais, where she held a bilateral meeting with Paulo Rangel, Portugal's Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.

They reviewed the current state of relations and explored opportunities to expand cooperation in various sectors, including trade, investment, renewable energy, maritime security, digital innovation, education, agriculture, and defense. The discussions also included establishing a Nigeria-Portugal Joint Commission to enhance political consultations and review progress towards concluding a bilateral air services agreement and a double taxation agreement.

Ojukwu met with members of the Nigerian community in Lisbon, commending their contributions to socio-economic development and urging them to remain united and abide by the law. She emphasized the Nigerian government's commitment to the welfare and consular support of Nigerians abroad.
