Nigeria Returns to FTSE Frontier Market Status on September 21

FTSE Russell has restored Nigeria's Frontier Market classification after nearly three years, citing improved forex liquidity and market accessibility reforms.
On August 27, FTSE Russell announced that Nigeria's stock market would achieve Frontier Market classification as of September 21, 2026. This reclassification represents the nation's reinstatement within the global investment framework following a prior exclusion.
The announcement resolved lingering doubts regarding the process, which had faced heightened scrutiny since June. Starting in October 2025, the index provider had placed Nigeria under Watch List status with an eye toward potential reclassification.
Several key improvements to market infrastructure underpinned this decision: bolstered foreign exchange availability, streamlined mechanisms for moving investment proceeds back across borders, and deployment of T+1 settlement procedures. These changes addressed longstanding obstacles that had prevented international capital from entering the market.
September 2023 saw Nigeria relegated from Frontier Market classification to Unclassified standing, driven by continuing constraints on currency access and restrictions on investment repatriation. Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele, serving as Coordinating Minister of the Economy, framed the latest upgrade as endorsement of economic reforms pursued by the Tinubu administration.
He emphasized that strengthened functioning within foreign exchange markets had proven decisive. Stakeholders across government and the private sector anticipate the reclassification will rekindle international investor appetite and facilitate foreign capital deployment.
Nigeria's exchange operator, the NGX Group, characterized the outcome as confirmation of substantive advances achieved. Inclusion within Frontier Market indices means Nigerian stocks regain prominence in benchmarks tracked by overseas asset managers, enhancing their reach among those directing resources into developing economy portfolios.
