Nigeria Canoe Trials Set for 2028 Olympic Success

The Nigerian Canoe Federation is focusing on achieving success at the 2028 Olympics by conducting canoe trials from March 21 to March 23 in Abuja. Akin Ogunbiyi, the federation's president, emphasized the commitment to grassroots development and international excellence, describing the trials as a pathway to identify and groom top talent for global competition.

The initiative aims to ensure inclusivity and equal representation across Nigeria's six geopolitical zones, with the federation having spent 15 years expanding the sport nationwide. The trials feature 200m, 500m, and 1000m races, with 70 athletes competing for a place on the national team.

Ogunbiyi assured athletes of institutional support, including scholarships and access to the best training facilities. The trials also marked the first time athletes used internationally certified fiberglass boats, enhancing their exposure to international standards.

Sijuola Oluwatoyosi Magret expressed gratitude for the opportunity, highlighting the trials as a valuable platform for athletes to prepare for international competitions and their ambition to represent Nigeria at the Olympics.
