NCoS Denies Robbery Claims at Kuje Custodial Centre

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has dismissed allegations of robbery involving inmates at the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre, which reportedly involved valuables worth N120 million. Chief Superintendent Jane Osuji, representing the agency, described the claims as false and misleading, asserting that the recent security search was conducted in accordance with standard operating procedures aimed at maintaining order and discipline within the facility.

The NCoS clarified that inmates are prohibited from possessing unauthorized items, including large sums of money, and that any personal belongings must be declared upon admission. The agency noted that records from the Kuje Custodial Centre show no indication of the alleged valuables being declared or recovered during the search.

Furthermore, there have been no formal complaints regarding theft or loss lodged by inmates. The NCoS urged media organizations and the public to refrain from circulating unverified claims that could undermine public confidence in the institution, especially following a terrorist attack in July 2022 that had previously raised concerns about security measures.
