Nigerian Government Bans Motorcycles on Coastal Highway

The Federal Ministry of Works announced a ban on commercial motorcycles (okadas) and tricycles on the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and its bridges, effective next week. Mr.

Olufemi Dare, a representative from the ministry, stated that this decision is necessary to protect the newly constructed superhighway and to prevent further deterioration. The ministry emphasized the importance of preserving the road to ensure its long-term sustainability.

Additionally, the Federal Ministry of Works warned against indiscriminate parking of trucks and articulated vehicles, which will no longer be allowed. The ministry also prohibited the indiscriminate disposal of refuse along the highway corridor, labeling such practices as unacceptable.

Offenders will face strict enforcement measures. Signage indicating these restrictions has already been installed along the highway.

Mr. Dare urged road users to comply with these directives in the interest of public safety and to enhance the lifespan of the infrastructure.
