Nigerian Universities Embrace Climate Literacy Initiatives

During the ‘Scaling Climate Literacy: An Inter-University Dialogue for Curriculum Transformation in South-west Nigeria’ held at the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Prof Folasade Ogunsola, the Vice-Chancellor, announced that Nigerian universities are ready to engage in climate literacy initiatives. The event featured the launch of a toolkit developed by the Institute of Nigeria-China Development Studies (NCDS) in collaboration with the Pulitzer Centre’s Africa Impact Seed Fund.

This toolkit aims to incorporate climate literacy into the Core Curriculum Minimum Academic Standard (CCMAS) across various disciplines, including environmental science, law, engineering, and the arts. Ogunsola emphasized the importance of a collaborative response to climate change that transcends institutional boundaries.

Eric Selemani, Education Manager at the Pulitzer Centre, highlighted the need for creative thinking and practical solutions to address contemporary challenges. Prof Olufemi Muibi Saibu, Director of NCDS, noted that the curriculum response to climate issues must be tailored to different faculties and local contexts.
