UNILAG and AFRETEC Launch Green Software Engineering Initiative

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the African Engineering Technology Network (AFRETEC) are collaborating to advance green software engineering as a means to tackle climate change. They are organizing a summer school from June 22 to June 26, which aims to deepen discussions on climate change and the role of sustainable software architecture in Africa's development agenda.

During the opening ceremony, AFRETEC UNILAG network coordinator Prof. Ismail Ibraheem explained that the program aligns with the consortium's mandate to leverage engineering technology to address Africa's development challenges. The summer school is designed to tackle societal challenges in software engineering, particularly in sustainability and climate change, and aims to create opportunities for digital transformation across the continent.

Dr. Adewol Usman Rufai emphasized the importance of promoting green software engineering and integrating sustainability into software engineering education. The program seeks to minimize the carbon footprint of digital systems and ensure that software engineering practices contribute to environmentally friendly solutions.
