Nigerians Rally in Abuja to Support Cuba Against U.S. Sanctions

On February 24, 2026, a significant rally took place in Abuja, Nigeria, organized by various groups including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Nigeria Solidarity Movement Cuba (NSMC). The rally aimed to express solidarity with Cuba in light of the U.S. embargo imposed since 1962.

Former Interior Minister and Honorary President of the NSMC, Rauf Aregbesola, articulated the historical connection between Africa and Cuba, noting that 90% of Cubans are of African descent. He emphasized that Cuba has sacrificed for the liberation of African nations, losing thousands of youth in the process.

Joe Ajaero, President of the NLC, declared that the struggle of the Cuban people is part of a broader fight for justice and sovereignty worldwide. The rally underscored the call for the U.S. to end its unilateral embargo against Cuba, which has been a point of contention for over three decades.
