Nigeria's Boxing Hopes Diminish at Commonwealth Games

At the ongoing 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, Nigeria's boxing aspirations faced a significant blow when David Akintola was eliminated in the opening round of the men's 80kg event. Akintola, seen as a promising talent, lost 4-1 to Tanzania's Yusef Lucasi Changalewa during their Round of 32 match at the SEC Centre.

Throughout the bout, Akintola struggled to assert himself as Changalewa showcased superior skills with sharper combinations and effective movement, leading to a decisive victory. This defeat marked Akintola as the third Nigerian boxer to exit in the first round, following Ayomide Hassan and Abdulramon Abdulwahab, who also faced early eliminations.

Hassan lost 4-0 to Lesotho's Refiloe Thai in the men's 70kg Round of 32. With three key contenders out of the competition, Team Nigeria's chances of securing a boxing medal are now severely diminished.
