UN Commends Nigeria's Democratic Progress and INEC Leadership

During a visit on Thursday, the United Nations highlighted Nigeria's democratic evolution as a significant aspect of its historical trajectory over the past 27 years. Prof.

Joash Amupitan, the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), received congratulations from UN Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, Moham Malik, for his appointment and the commendable management of Nigeria's democracy. The UN noted Nigeria's status as the largest nation in terms of population and the complexities involved in conducting elections.

Elsi G. Attafuah, UNDP Resident Representative in Nigeria, expressed appreciation for INEC's leadership and emphasized the need for transparency and inclusivity in elections.

The UN has been supporting Nigeria's electoral processes since 1999, introducing technological advancements and promoting youth and gender perspectives in elections. The conversation also touched on the importance of constitutional reforms and the need for additional support for upcoming elections in 2027.
