UN Commends Nigeria's Electoral Progress and Reforms

The United Nations acknowledged Nigeria's democratic evolution over the past 27 years, particularly noting the advancements in the electoral system. During a visit to Abuja, UN Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, Moham Malik, congratulated INEC Chairman Prof.

Joash Amupitan on his appointment and commended the commission's management of democracy in Nigeria, the largest nation in West Africa by population. The UN emphasized the importance of consistent electoral reforms and support for credible elections, particularly with the upcoming 2027 elections.

Elsi G. Attafuah, UNDP Resident Representative, highlighted the UN's long-standing relationship with INEC, providing technical support and voter education since 1999.

The UN aims to leverage existing programs to assist Nigeria in achieving electoral integrity and transparency, while also addressing the need for constitutional reforms and special seat bills in parliament. The UN expressed optimism about Nigeria's potential to lead democratic initiatives in Africa.
