NFF President Ibrahim Gusau Resigns Amid World Cup Failures

Ibrahim Gusau has resigned as president of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), along with General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi and the entire NFF executive committee, due to mounting pressure over Nigeria's disappointing football results. Gusau announced his resignation at a press conference on Thursday in Abuja, with his tenure officially ending in 34 days after only one year in office since his election in September 2022.

His decision follows Nigeria's failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup and the Women's World Cup for the first time since the tournament's inception in 1991. The Super Falcons finished last in their group at the African Women’s Cup of Nations and were eliminated in a World Cup play-off against South Africa.

A fact-finding committee confirmed issues within Nigerian football, recommending a reform process. Gusau defended his administration's achievements but stated his resignation aims to allow for a "full and clean process of reform.".
