NSIB Investigates Marine Casualty at Bonny Anchorage

On May 20, 2026, a marine casualty occurred involving the MV Maersk Valparaiso and the oil tanker MT Lady Martina at Bonny Anchorage in River State. The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) classified the incident as a serious marine casualty.

Following the notification, NSIB activated its marine occurrence response protocol and deployed an investigative team to Bonny on May 22, 2026. The team began preliminary investigations, which included interviewing the master and crew members, collecting operational records, and securing relevant documents.

The investigation also involved downloading voyage data recorder (VDR) information from the MV Maersk Valparaiso for forensic navigational analysis, in accordance with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) casualty investigation code MSC 255 (84). NSIB has formally notified the Transport Safety Investigation Bureau (TSIB) in Singapore and is collaborating with relevant local and international stakeholders.

The bureau reassured the public that the investigation would be conducted to the highest professional standards and urged stakeholders to refrain from speculation during the ongoing investigation. A final report will be published upon completion.
