NIMC Refutes NIN Database Breach Claims, Ensures Security

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has officially dismissed allegations circulating on social media regarding a breach of Nigeria's National Identification Number (NIN) database. In a statement released by Kayode Adegoke, the Head of Corporate Communications at NIMC, the Commission described these claims as “false and unfounded,” noting that the video being shared is a recycled report from 2024 that had already been discredited.

NIMC affirmed that the National Identity Database (NIDB) has never been compromised and maintains a robust security infrastructure to protect personal data. The Commission expressed concern over the spread of unverified information, urging the public to rely on official NIMC channels for accurate updates.

Additionally, NIMC introduced the NIN Authentication (NINAuth) service, which requires explicit consent from NIN holders before sharing data for verification processes. This initiative aligns with the NIMC Act 2026 and the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, reinforcing NIMC's commitment to safeguarding citizens' identity information.
