NiMet Workers Demand Strike Over Unpaid Wage Arrears

Staff of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) have formally requested their national union leadership to reactivate a previously suspended strike due to the non-payment of outstanding minimum wage arrears and other allowances. In a letter signed by Okerafor Romeo, Hisham Ibrahim, and Ogidi John, the workers accused management of failing to honor agreements made after interventions by the minister.

They stated they are owed nine months of the 2019 minimum wage arrears, four months of the 2024 minimum wage arrears, and several outstanding allowances. The unions expressed that despite showing considerable restraint, the prolonged delay in payments has pushed workers to their limit.

They noted that an agreement was reached with the Minister for a structured timetable for settling these entitlements, but management has not implemented this schedule. Additionally, they raised concerns over delays in the agency’s relativity adjustment, warning that this could lead to further backlogs similar to previous wage obligations.
