NIMC Denies NIN Database Hack Claims, Urges Caution

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has addressed concerns regarding a viral video alleging that Nigeria's National Identification Number (NIN) database was hacked. NIMC stated that the claim is false and that the video is an old report from 2024 that had already been debunked.

In a statement issued by Kayode Adegoke, Head of Corporate Communications, NIMC affirmed that there has been no breach of the National Identity Database (NIDB) at any time. The commission highlighted its multi-layered security infrastructure designed to protect the personal information of registered Nigerians and legal residents, maintained according to international best practices.

NIMC urged the public to disregard the misleading video and obtain information solely from its official channels. Additionally, NIMC introduced the NIN Authentication (NINAuth) platform, which enhances data security and requires consent from NIN holders before sharing personal information for verification purposes.

This initiative aligns with the NIMC Act 2026 and the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023.
