NISO Explains Power Reductions in Lagos, Abuja, North

The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) announced that recent reductions in electricity allocations to Distribution Companies in Lagos, Abuja, and northern Nigeria were due to multiple transmission line outages. These outages constrained the national grid's capacity, prompting NISO to adjust generation dispatch and power allocations to maintain safe operational limits and prevent broader system disturbances.

In a statement dated Sunday, NISO clarified that the changes were not due to a generation shortage but rather transmission constraints. The Lagos area was particularly affected by outages on the Olorunsogo-Ayede 330kV Line 1, Benin-Egbin 330kV Line 1, and Benin-Omotosho 330kV Line 1, while the Osogbo-Ikeja West circuit was out of service for an extended period.

The cumulative loss of these critical circuits reduced electricity transfer capacity into Lagos, leading to curtailed allocations to Eko Electricity Distribution Company, Ikeja Electric, and Sakete international supply. The northern corridor also faced issues, particularly with the Shiroro-Mararaba 330kV Line 1 outage affecting allocations to Abuja and the northern region.
