NIWA Bans Commercial Boats at Unlicensed Points for Safety

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) announced a ban on commercial boat activities at unlicensed loading points across Nigeria to enhance safety measures and prevent accidents. Managing Director Bola Oyebamiji emphasized the importance of enforcing regulations to improve operational standards and protect passengers.

NIWA urged the National Assembly to support their efforts and collaborate with riverine states to ensure compliance with safety guidelines. The ban prohibits commercial passenger boats from loading at unauthorized points and mandates the use of life jackets for all passengers.

Unlicensed boats and operators will face penalties, including removal from waterways. NIWA also plans to provide safety training, distribute life jackets, and deploy modern passenger ferries to enhance water transportation safety.
