NLC Condemns DSS for Omoyele Sowore's Arrest

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) issued a statement condemning the Department of State Services (DSS) for its conduct during the arrest of activist Omoyele Sowore at the Federal High Court in Abuja. NLC President Joe Ajaero described the incident as an embarrassment and a threat to Nigeria's democratic institutions.

He criticized the DSS's "rowdy scene" and "bullish behavior," stating that the mass intimidation displayed during Sowore's custody was unnecessary and humiliating. Ajaero expressed concern that the DSS appeared to act beyond its constitutional mandate, which should focus on protecting individuals rather than serving the interests of the government.

He emphasized that the Nigerian state should be prioritized over individual government officials and warned that democracy is endangered when institutions prioritize power over the rule of law. Ajaero drew historical comparisons to the Watergate scandal in the United States, urging the DSS to reflect on its actions and adhere to its constitutional responsibilities in safeguarding democracy and justice.
