McEvoy Critiques Lack of Bonus for World Record Swim

Cameron McEvoy expressed his frustration over the absence of financial rewards for breaking the men's 50m freestyle world record at the China Open, where he achieved a time of 20.88 seconds, surpassing the previous record of 20.91 seconds set by Cesar Cielo 17 years ago. McEvoy, 31, noted that his accomplishment was achieved without the aid of performance-enhancing suits, which were banned in 2010.

He criticized the current landscape of swimming, stating that while he received no bonus for his record, other athletes, such as Kristian Gkolomeev in the United States, received substantial rewards for their achievements. McEvoy pointed out that the World Aquatics organization does not provide bonuses for records set at events not sanctioned by governing bodies, contrasting this with the rewards available at other championships.

He emphasized that achieving records cleanly is a significant challenge and deserves recognition, reflecting on his dedication to training and the fulfillment of a childhood dream.
