Presidency Defends Opposition's Right to Function in Nigeria

The Nigerian Presidency, through Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Sundai Dare, has stated that no opposition party is being obstructed from functioning. This clarification was made during a political discussion on Channels Television in response to protests by the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The ADC is contesting the Independent National Electoral Commission's (INEC) decision to suspend recognition of its leadership faction, which includes David Mark, following various court rulings. The ADC described INEC's actions as a plot to exclude them from the 2027 elections.

Dare dismissed these allegations, emphasizing that the political space remains open for all parties, with 20 political parties operating freely in Nigeria. He rejected claims that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is shrinking political space and asserted that the federal government will protect the rights of opposition parties to operate freely.

Dare also highlighted the need for opposition parties to build strong political structures rather than resorting to sentiments.
