Peter Obi Blames Leadership for Nigeria's World Cup Absence

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, stated that Nigeria's absence from the 2026 FIFA World Cup is due to failures in political leadership rather than a shortage of talent. He made this assertion in a statement on his official social media page.

Obi highlighted the need for political leaders to create an environment that allows young people to develop and maximize their talents. He pointed out that Nigeria's absence from the tournament is not indicative of a lack of talent, as evidenced by the performances of Nigerian artists and athletes.

Obi commended music star Davido for using his platform to draw attention to Nigeria's security challenges during the tournament. Davido appeared in a custom black leather jacket inscribed with the names of 39 schoolchildren and seven teachers reportedly abducted by bandits in Oyo State.

Obi stressed that Nigeria's security challenges require national and international attention and called for deliberate efforts to create opportunities for young people.
