NPC Boosts Birth Registration Efforts in Kano State

The National Population Commission (NPC) is intensifying its birth registration outreach in Kano State, focusing on children under one year. This initiative, which began in April 2026, is supported by UNICEF and funded by the Netherlands.

Hajiya Fatima Moham Bashir, head of the Civil Registration and Vital Statistics at NPC Kano State, emphasized the importance of early birth registration for securing children's legal identity and access to social services. Hajiya Maryam Murtala, a mother of five, shared her experience registering her eight-month-old child and highlighted the necessity of birth registration for school admission.

Mr. Sama Ila Lawan Bello, a caregiver, urged women to take advantage of the free registration program.

Despite the success of the outreach, Ali Nuhu, Deputy Chief Registrar for Gwale Local Government Area, noted challenges in reaching remote communities due to transportation issues. He called for increased sensitization efforts involving traditional rulers and religious leaders to ensure wider coverage.
