NPC Registers 36,000 Births in Kano State in Nine Months

The National Population Commission (NPC) reported the registration of 36,000 births in Kano State within a nine-month period, facilitated by the deployment of an electronic birth registration system. Balarab Kabir, the Kano State Director of NPC, disclosed this during a two-day training session aimed at enhancing the skills of local government officials.

The training, organized in collaboration with the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) and supported by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and UNICEF, involved 44 local government areas and focused on improving the efficiency and accuracy of the registration process. Despite the progress, challenges such as system downtime, login issues, and inadequate support for field registrars in hard-to-reach areas were noted.

Kabir emphasized that birth registration is a fundamental right for every child and called for stakeholder support to ensure comprehensive registration. Aisha Umar highlighted the training's role in exposing participants to modern techniques and digital tools to address low birth registration rates in rural communities.
