Yobe NPC Launches Digital Birth and Death Registration

The National Population Commission (NPC) Yobe state office commenced a statewide digital registration of births and deaths under the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (E-CRVS) system on Wednesday. This initiative marks a significant shift from the traditional paper-based civil registration process.

Alhaji Tonga Betara Bularafa, the Federal Commissioner representing Yobe, announced that the VitalReg platform became fully operational across the state’s 17 local government areas effective July 1, 2026. Bularafa emphasized the importance of this step in strengthening civil registration and improving the generation of vital statistics, ensuring that every birth and death in Yobe is captured through a modern, efficient, and digitally enabled system.

The E-CRVS system was inaugurated nationally by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on November 8, 2023, and is now operational across all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Bularafa highlighted that Nigeria records an estimated five million births annually, with birth registration coverage at about 57 percent and death registration below 20 percent, which limits legal identity and reliable data for national planning.
