NYC Grocers Sue Mayor Mamdani Over Subsidized Stores

A coalition of immigrant-owned grocery store and bodega owners, represented by the Multicultural Business Coalition (MBC), filed a class-action lawsuit against Mayor Zohran Mamdani and the city in New York County Supreme Court on Monday. The lawsuit aims to block Mamdani's plan to open five government-subsidized supermarkets across the five boroughs, which would sell essential items at 30% below market rates.

The plaintiffs argue that this creates an unfair competitive advantage that threatens the survival of existing neighborhood grocers, particularly affecting Latino, Asian, and other immigrant business owners. The lawsuit claims the plan violates state civil rights laws and the equal protection clause of the State Constitution.

It also alleges that the city failed to conduct a proper economic impact study before selecting store locations. Mayor Mamdani defended the initiative, stating it addresses a cost-of-living crisis and has allocated $70 million for the project, with the first store set to open in Hunts Point, Bronx, in 2027.
